1.3.0 is out, woohoo! 🎉

👉 guix.gnu.org/en/blog/2021/gnu-

Lots of good stuff in there: usability improvements, performance improvements, support, and more!

@civodul "Liberating. Guix is an advanced distribution of the GNU operating system developed by the GNU Project—which respects the freedom of computer users. "

Except for the major parts (like the linux kernel) that aren't developed by the GNU project.

I thought they'd moved past trying to retcon around HURD being a non-starter.

It's a shame because I'd be interested in this project if I didn't feel like I'd have to drink the kool-aid.

> It's a shame because I'd be interested in this project if

You'd not. You did not even care to scroll the front page past the first sentence or click the "about" link.

@wire @civodul It's unfortunate you're assuming that. The wording on the site is also unfortunate, and let's be frank: GNU has taken enough hits indulging RMS's controversial takes. It additionally seems unhelpful to the project to - intentionally or not - appear to be erasing all the other FOSS contributions (linux kernel, amongst them) by saying it was "Developed by the GNU project" when that is not entirely factual.

@docskrzyk @civodul
Couldn't you at least scroll to "If you don't use GNU Guix as a standalone GNU/Linux distribution, you still can use it as a package manager on top of any GNU/Linux distribution."?

Or follow the gnu.org/gnu/about-gnu.html from the first sentence.

Or follow the "About" link and read "Guix System is an advanced distribution of the GNU operating system. It uses the Linux-libre kernel, and support for the Hurd is being worked on.".

@docskrzyk @civodul
Nobody is fooled into thinking Guix is built *only* on GNU, it's not a real issue. You will not find any Guix user who does not know they are using Linux. The opposite is true: lots of "Ubuntu Linux" users, for example, have never ever heard about GNU.

@civodul If you wish to bake an operating system truly from scratch, first you must `guix build world`.
